Advanced Scheduling Mastery: Project Schedule Development Using MS Project for JKR Compliance

Course Duration

3 Days (21 Training Hours)

Course Overview

A well-developed project schedule is not merely a contractual requirement—it is a practical tool to guide execution, monitor progress, and support decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

In many construction projects, schedules are prepared for submission purposes but lack the structure and logic required to reflect actual site execution. This advanced course addresses that gap by focusing on how to develop a schedule that is aligned with construction methodology and suitable for progress monitoring.

Built on the JKR 6-Step Planning Model, this masterclass guides participants through a structured, proven process from Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to comprehensive schedule development, cost loading, and real-time progress updating using MS Project. Participants will develop a complete, submission-ready project schedule and master progress measurement and reporting to ensure JKR compliance.

PM Advance philosophy is to train and consult professionals not only based on theoretical scheduling principles, but also based on real-world construction project experience and proven JKR submission practices. This will effectively impart the practical knowledge and industry best practices to enable you to develop submission-ready schedules that drive successful project execution.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a complete project schedule based on the proven JKR 6-Step Planning Model
  • Structure a deliverable-based Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) aligned with construction execution methodology
  • Build a logic-linked, resource-informed schedule using MS Project with proper activity sequencing and dependencies
  • Prepare a schedule that meets JKR standards and passes Appendix B self-audit checks
  • Implement Earned Value Management (EVM) with cost loading and S-Curve development
  • Perform progress updating and variance analysis using MS Project
  • Generate professional progress reports suitable for JKR submission and stakeholder communication

Course Outline

  • Overview of JKR Scheduling Guidelines and Appendix B expectations
  • Distinction between planning and scheduling
  • Introduction to the JKR 6-Step Planning Model framework
  • Defining project scope into manageable, deliverable-based components
  • Structuring WBS for construction projects: phases, trades, and work packages
  • Ensuring completeness, clarity, and non-overlapping structure
  • Hands-On Exercise: Develop WBS in MS Project for case study project
  • Logical relationships in construction (FS, SS, FF, SF)
  • Sequencing activities based on construction methodology and site execution
  • Interface management between trades
  • Project calendar setup: working days, holidays, shutdowns
  • Resource types and resource calendar definition
  • Hands-On Exercise: Link activities with logic and define calendars/resources in MS Project
  • Basis of duration: method, productivity rates, and scope alignment
  • Avoiding unrealistic durations: common mistakes in construction projects
  • Duration entry and estimation techniques
  • Hands-On Exercise: Assign activity durations and review preliminary schedule

Day 2: Schedule Development & Cost Structure

  • Critical Path Method fundamentals and critical path identification
  • Understanding float: total float, free float, and project float

  • Interpreting the schedule: identifying risks and constraints
  • Hands-On Exercise: Generate and review schedule in MS Project; analyze critical path
  • Activity cost assignment: linking costs to work packages
  • Cost baseline and budgeted cost of work scheduled (BCWS)
  • S-Curve development: cumulative cost distribution over project lifecycle
  • Earned Value Management (EVM) concepts: PV, EV, AC
  • Hands-On Exercise: Create cost-loaded schedule and generate S-Curve in MS Project
  • JKR Appendix B requirements checklist
  • Self-audit process: identifying compliance gaps
